At first glance, the “T” in LGBTQ appears as a natural and settled member of a coalition of sexual and gender minorities. However, the lived experiences, historical struggles, and political objectives of transgender individuals are distinct from those of gay, lesbian, and bisexual people. Whereas LGB identities primarily concern sexual orientation (the gender(s) one is attracted to), transgender identity concerns gender identity (one’s internal sense of being male, female, both, or neither).
