Mara got out. She didn’t know why. Some wrong turns aren’t about distance — they’re about logic falling away. The air smelled of copper and honey. The trunk opened on its own. “Turn around,” she whispered

He tried. The car reversed five feet, then ten. The wall stayed. The trees on either side leaned inward, branches scraping the doors like fingernails.

She’d never shown that photo to anyone. She’d taken one thirty years ago, too

The trunk slammed shut. Leo screamed. She turned.

“Nobody’s back there,” Leo said. But his voice cracked.

“GPS says this cuts forty minutes,” he said, swerving onto a gravel road marked FOREST SERVICE USE ONLY . The sign was half-rotten, like a tooth punched out of the earth.
