Unlike normal waves that are created by the wind, tsunamis are natural disasters that can travel across entire oceans at tremendous speeds. The word “tsunami” comes from Japanese and means “harbour wave.” What Causes a Tsunami? Most tsunamis are triggered by earthquakes under the sea. When two tectonic plates (the giant pieces of the Earth’s crust) suddenly slide past each other, a huge amount of water is pushed upwards. This creates the start of a tsunami.
