She draws it again, this time adding a little star and a smiley face. The circle EXPLODES, sending her flying into a pile of screaming pumpkins.

A sleepy, picture-perfect New England town. The only thing cutting through the autumn stillness is the SQUEAL of a school bus.

LUZ Maybe I need more heart?

She bumps into a rusty dumpster. Carved into the brick wall behind it is a strange, wooden door. No hinges. Just a single, flickering porch light shaped like an owl.

Luz, thinking fast, pulls out a party sparkler from her backpack. She lights it and throws it.

A town crier (a floating, three-eyed newt) shrieks:
