However, the alliance has not always been smooth

For decades, transgender people have been part of the same bars, community centers, and activist organizations as gay, lesbian, and bisexual people. They faced the same police raids, the same social ostracization, and the same HIV/AIDS crisis (trans women, particularly Black and Latina trans women, have been disproportionately affected by HIV). This shared experience of being sexual and gender "deviants" from a heteronormative, cisnormative society forged a natural coalition.
