They eventually settle in a college town. Lolita grows increasingly unhappy, rebellious, and demands money to save for a secret escape. She begins receiving small sums of money from a mysterious stranger — later revealed to be the playwright Clare Quilty, who has been following them.

Three years later, he receives a letter from a now-17-year-old, married, and pregnant Lolita. He visits her, offering her money for her silence. She reveals she left with Quilty, who was cruel and threw her out when she refused to perform in his pornographic films. Humbert asks her to leave with him; she refuses. The film portrays their intimacy more overtly than Kubrick's version, though it stops short of graphic depiction.
