Let’s be honest: if you read Gail Carson Levine’s 1997 Newbery Honor book Ella Enchanted as a kid, your first reaction to the 2004 movie was probably confusion, followed by betrayal. Where was the gravity? The letters? The slow-burn romance?

This movie is a musical. Sort of. It’s a jukebox musical set in a quasi-medieval world. Prince Char and the giants sing a Queen medley ("Somebody to Love"). Ella’s father performs a bizarre crooner version of "Don’t Go Breaking My Heart." The knights break into a choreographed dance to "I Only Want to Be With You." It shouldn’t work. It absolutely works.
