“The drop wasn’t weapons,” Viktor continued. “It was a list. Names of every deep-cover sleeper agent your agency lost track of after the Cold War. You didn’t want the list, Eva. You wanted me to confirm that the list was real. And then you wanted me dead so no one else could use it.”
“This one, Eva, you’re not the interrogator.”

Eva finally picked up the photo. Her hand was steady, but her pulse was not.
Viktor smiled. It was not a pleasant smile. “You left a door open.”
The bulb went out.
Viktor leaned forward. The scars on his wrists—from the last interrogation—caught the light. “Because someone else found the list. Someone worse than your agency. And they’ve already activated the first sleeper.”
