Unlike many dance shows (e.g., Glee or Make It or Break It ), the dance sequences are frequently full-length, uncut ballet numbers. Choreography is by Marguerite Derricks, and Foster and the actresses trained extensively. The dance is the heart, not just a backdrop.

The four main ballet girls (Sasha, Ginny, Bo, and Melanie) are not just stereotypes. They have real problems (eating disorders, academic pressure, absent parents, class issues). Sasha (Julia Goldani Telles) later became a star in The Affair and The Girlfriend Experience . Bunheads -2012-
