The relationship between the transgender community and the broader queer culture is not one of a passive member, but of a dynamic, often revolutionary engine. From the bricks of Stonewall to the TikTok filters of today, trans people have been central to the fight for liberation—even as they have often been marginalized within the very community they helped build. The mainstream narrative of the gay rights movement often begins with the Stonewall Uprising of 1969. What is frequently sanitized out of history is that the two most prominent figures fighting back against the police that night were transgender women: Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera.
